  • Frames the DAY they came home — Gotcha Day at the threshold, the carrier peek, the first-night exhaustion: the beginning that turned the house into "their" home
  • Soft Watercolor Memories style — warm pigment washes + soft edges, tuned for the gentle, hopeful mood of a beginning chapter

Gotcha Day, blurry from excitement

What your artist kept: Cooper's tentative paw across the threshold, the warm hallway light, the new collar tag catching it. What they fixed: the excitement-blur — softened into watercolor texture that holds the moment without freezing it.

Mesh shadow, two big eyes peeking out

What your artist kept: the wide-eyed peek through the mesh, the carrier corner dent, the new-home apprehension. What they fixed: recovered the face details from the mesh shadow — gently, the carrier translates into a soft watercolor frame around Mochi.

Finally asleep, dim bedroom lamp

What your artist kept: the deep first-night exhaustion, Atlas's body finally relaxed, the new bed's neatly tucked corners. What they fixed: the low-light grain — translated into a warm watercolor wash that holds the late-night quiet.

The 4 visual stages of
a hand-illustrated heirloom.

We follow one artwork — Caleb & Maya P.'s The Day They Came Home — through all four visual stages so you can see the craft, not just the finished product.

Stage 1 — Caleb's original phone photo of Cooper at the front door on Gotcha Day
Day 0 · Your Photo

Phone snap upload

Upload any phone snap — imperfect lighting, motion blur, distracting backgrounds all work. Your matched PetSoul artist extracts the moment, not the pixels.

Sketch for approval

Your artist sends a pencil sketch — composition, pose, mood, framing. You approve, request changes, or use unlimited free revisions. Nothing moves to color until you say yes.

Day 4–7 · Final Illustration

Hand-illustrated artwork

Your artist hand-illustrates the final piece in Soft Watercolor Memories — warm pigment washes, soft edges, signed in the corner. One last approval before we print + frame.

❓ Customer Q&A

Common questions,
honest answers.

The 5 questions buyers ask most before placing their first Welcome Home order. Still wondering something? Chat with the PetSoul team →

Q1.My Gotcha Day photo is blurry / inside a carrier / shaky from excitement — will it still work? +
The imperfections ARE the homecoming. Shaky-hand blur, mesh-shadow from the carrier, low light from the first night, the off-center crop because you were one-handing the phone — these are exactly the moments Welcome Home was made for. Our artists will interpret the moment and may suggest a hybrid (your homecoming angle + a clearer face shot from a different photo). If your photo is genuinely too dark or their face is completely hidden, we'll email you within 24h with specific re-shoot tips. You only pay if we can make it work.
Q2.Can I have more than one pet in the portrait — multi-pet adoption? +
Yes — up to 5 pets in one Welcome Home portrait. Each additional pet is +$20 (covers extra composition + illustration time). They don't need to be on the same homecoming day — your PetSoul artist composites them naturally into the same scene. Great for families who adopted siblings, or for honoring multiple arrival days as one story.
Q3.What if I don't like the sketch or final illustration? +
You get two approvals before we print: the pencil sketch (Day 2) and the final color illustration (Day 6). At either stage you can request unlimited revisions, free — different pose, lighting, expression, composition.

30-day Love-It Guarantee: Within 30 days of delivery, if your portrait doesn't match what you approved — or arrives damaged in transit — we'll replace or refund, your choice. Note: because you sign off twice before printing, refunds aren't issued for "I changed my mind" after approval.
Read full policy →
Q4.I need it for the adoption anniversary / Gotcha Day. Can you guarantee timing? +
Standard delivery is 10–14 days total. For tight anniversary deadlines, add Rush Production (+$20) to compress to 5–7 days, and Priority Proof (+$10) to get your sketch in 24h instead of 2–3 days. For dates under 5 days from order, chat with our team first — we'll confirm before charging.
Q5.Do you ship internationally? Any extra fees? +
Yes — we ship to 38 countries. US orders over $99 ship free; international shipping calculated at checkout (typically $18–$40 depending on size + destination). Buyer responsible for any import duties/VAT — these are usually 10–20% of order value in EU, AU, CA. See full shipping table →

Caleb & Maya P.'s Welcome Home Pet Portrait — Cooper's The Day They Came Home hanging in their Asheville entryway

★★★★★
"She framed the threshold."

"Cooper was 11 weeks old when we drove him home from the shelter outside Charlotte — a brindle mix, three pounds of nervous energy crammed into a borrowed crate. We pulled into the driveway, opened the back door, and just sat with him for ten minutes before bringing him in. The actual homecoming photo we took is on the threshold — his front paws on the entryway tile, back paws still on the welcome mat, head tilted, ears half-up. He was deciding. The photo is blurry from how shaky my hands were. I almost didn't send it in. But our PetSoul artist didn't just illustrate a portrait. She framed the threshold itself — kept the warm hallway light spilling toward Cooper, the new tag on his collar catching it, the half-up ears. Cooper's two now and the threshold is a worn-down rug. The painting hangs above the console where we drop our keys. Every time we come home, the first thing we see is the moment Cooper did, three years ago."

"She kept the mesh shadow."

"I've ordered pet portraits before from other studios. Nothing came close. When I unboxed Mochi's Welcome Home portrait, the first thing I noticed wasn't the framing or the colors — it was the mesh shadow on her face. The diagonal grid from the carrier door, faint but there, falling across her left cheek. That's a specific thing — most studios would smooth it out, treat it as 'noise.' But the mesh shadow is the whole story. It's why the photo is from inside the carrier, not after she came out. It's the shyness. The not-yet. Our PetSoul artist saw it in the reference photo and decided it mattered. That's not template work. That's not POD. That's a person who looked at a scared kitten in a carrier and decided to honor the moment before she trusted us. I cried in my office when I saw it."

"That's the day she chose us."

"My partner and I fostered Cleo for two weeks last spring — a beagle mix who came to us terrified and ribs-out. We weren't planning to keep her. Then on day fourteen, we drove her to the rescue's adoption event, and she just… refused to get out of the car. Sat there shaking, looking at us. We turned around and drove home. The photo I sent in was from that exact afternoon — Cleo on our porch, freshly bathed, nervous, with a 'foster' tag still on her collar she didn't know was about to come off. I ordered the Welcome Home portrait as a one-year-anniversary gift for my partner. When he unwrapped it on the morning of our adoption-day anniversary, he cried for ten minutes. Then he said: 'That's the day she chose us.' He hung it next to the front door. Cleo walks past it every day. PetSoul didn't just illustrate a dog — they captured the moment we became a family of three. Best $109 I've ever spent."

Customers say

Customers love that the Welcome Home portraits capture the specific homecoming moment — Gotcha Day at the threshold, the carrier peek, the first-night exhaustion — not a generic likeness. Many highlight PetSoul's watercolor texture turning shaky phone photos into intentional softness, and the artists' refusal to "clean up" emotional details (carrier mesh shadow, half-up ears, low-light grain) that make the moment what it is. The two-stage approval process receives consistent praise. A few mention delivery occasionally runs slightly longer than the 10–14 day window, and one note about frame-damaged-in-transit resolved quickly by customer service.

"They kept the half-up ears."

Threshold photo of Bailey on Gotcha Day — back paws on the welcome mat, front paws on the entryway tile, ears half-up. Blurry, shaky, almost didn't send it in. The artist kept exactly what mattered: the deciding moment. Hangs above our key drop now and it's the first thing we see walking in.

"Caught the first-night sleep — finally letting go."

Atlas had a rough first month — wouldn't really sleep, kept getting up to check on us. The photo I sent was from night six, the first time I saw him fully out, paws tucked, neatly inside his new bed. Low light, grainy, barely visible. The watercolor wash turned the grain into atmosphere. It's the moment I knew he'd chosen us back.

"My Gotcha Day photo, finally framable."

Hugo's Gotcha Day photo was a blurry kitchen mid-tail-wag — terrible technical quality, perfect emotional quality. The artist's watercolor turned it into the framed version of itself. Hangs by the front door. Worth every dollar.

"Two rescues, two homecomings, one frame."

We adopted Luna and Mochi nine months apart. Wanted one portrait that held both arrival days — Luna's threshold paw, Mochi's carrier peek. The artist composed them like they happened on the same day. Pippa is bossy, Mochi is shy — both personalities came through. Worth the +$20 multi-pet.

"They kept the mesh shadow. That's the whole story."

Mochi's photo was from inside the carrier — diagonal grid shadow on her cheek, scared little kitten face. I asked first sketch to "smooth out the shadow" since it looked like noise. The artist messaged back: "the shadow IS the moment — the shyness before she trusted you." Changed my mind in 24h. Best version of the photo I could've imagined.

"Gorgeous artwork, slightly slow shipping."

Took 15 days total — one day past the 10–14 estimate. The Welcome Home portrait itself is 5★ — the artist nailed Biscuit's golden coat and the wide-eyed Gotcha Day expression. Knocking one star purely for timing — wanted it for the adoption anniversary.

"Oak-Tone lighter than I expected."

The Oak-Tone finish is lighter than the website preview suggested — I wanted something to match our dark entryway console but it reads pale natural in daylight. The artist's illustration of my retriever's adoption day is flawless though, captured the tail-up trot through the door perfectly. Would order again, just go Walnut-Tone next time.

"Beautiful art, frame feels light."

Welcome Home portrait of Biscuit on Gotcha Day is beautiful — the artist did great work with my photo. But I expected a heavier frame for $109. It feels lighter than other framed canvases I've bought. Still, the art is what matters most, and that's solid. Hangs in the nursery now.

"Our artist asked the right questions."

I sent three photos and the artist picked the one that captured Hugo best — the one from his first day home, mid-tail-wag in the kitchen. They even asked about his personality (rescue, tentative at first, then a goofball). Felt collaborative, not transactional. The Walnut-Tone frame matches our entryway perfectly.

"Foster fail anniversary gift. He cried for ten minutes."

My partner and I fostered Cleo for two weeks — she refused to leave our car at the adoption event. We turned around and drove home. Foster fail. The Welcome Home portrait captured her on our porch that day — 'foster' tag still on, didn't know yet that she'd chosen us. Unwrapped it on our adoption-day anniversary. He cried for ten minutes. Best $109 ever spent.

"Catches the morning hallway light beautifully."

Walnut frame is heavier and nicer than the photos suggested. The watercolor catches morning light beautifully on our east-facing hallway wall — exactly where I greet the dog every morning. The whole apartment feels more "home" with Bear's first day up there.

Christmas gift for my wife — black lab portrait of our boy Cooper on his Gotcha Day, scared half-up ears at the threshold. She unwrapped it and went silent for 30 seconds. Then she cried. "Third pet portrait — first one that asked who she was."

I've ordered from 3 other pet portrait services. This is the first one that asked about Luna's personality (rescue, tentative, came to us emaciated and slowly thawed). Other services just want the photo. The artist wanted the story — and you can see the story in the final piece. Hangs above our nursery rocker now.
